I have visited many beautiful places with my camera. The Scottish Highlands, the hills of the Lake District, forests filled with mist and quiet lakes at sunrise. Yet I always seem to return to the same places: the coast, the water and the horizon.
As if the sea offers something I cannot find anywhere else.

The Calm of the North Sea
The North Sea never feels truly silent, yet it gives me a sense of calm. Perhaps it is the feeling of space. An empty beach, a seemingly endless horizon and nothing but the sound of wind and waves. Very little happens, while everything constantly changes.
On days when my mind feels crowded, the coast often clears that feeling surprisingly quickly. The sea asks for nothing, expects nothing and is never in a hurry. Sometimes it is dark and restless, sometimes almost flat and gentle.
That is why even the same location never feels exactly the same twice.
Oosterschelde and Grevelingen
The Oosterschelde and Grevelingen have a very different character from the North Sea. Less dramatic perhaps, but more intimate because of it. The water moves differently, the light changes more subtly and the atmosphere often feels quieter.
For landscape photography, these are places that continue to hold my attention. Clouds drift across the sky, wind creates patterns on the water and every season brings its own colours and moods. That constant change is what makes these places so special to me.
Wind, Clouds and Change
What attracts me most about the sea is that a coastline never stays the same. Weather changes constantly. Wind builds waves, clouds break apart and the best light can disappear again within minutes.
That temporary nature is what makes coastal photography so fascinating to me.
You can plan where you want to go, but you can never fully predict what you will find. Sometimes you return home without making a photograph that truly stands out. Other times, an unexpected moment creates something far better than you had imagined.
Perhaps that is also why an empty beach appeals to me more than a crowded city square.
The sea creates space. Not only in the landscape, but also in my mind.
Why I Keep Coming Back
No matter how many different locations I visit, the coastline always draws me back. Not only because of the photography, but because of the feeling that comes with it. The space. The wind. The constantly changing light. And perhaps most of all, the knowledge that you will never encounter exactly the same landscape twice.
The photographs I make along the coast, the North Sea, the Oosterschelde and the Grevelingen are images I still enjoy sharing. Not only because of the photographs themselves, but because of the sense of calm, wonder and memories connected to those moments.
A selection of these images is available as fine art prints and digital files for personal use, home interiors or workspaces. A way to bring a small part of the sea, the coastline and its atmosphere into everyday life.
