Plompetoren of Koudekerke

At the edge of the Oosterschelde on Schouwen-Duiveland stands the striking Plompetoren of Koudekerke. This remarkable structure is a silent witness to the lost village of Koudekerke, which disappeared centuries ago due to severe flooding. Despite the devastation, the tower remained standing, and even today it graces the landscape as a reminder of resilience. Moreover, it offers visitors not only panoramic views over the water but also a tangible link to the past.

History Shaped by the Zeeland Landscape

Koudekerke was once a thriving village, yet life here was challenging. Storm surges and coastal erosion relentlessly struck the area, forcing residents to rebuild time and again. Eventually, the village had to be abandoned. However, the Plompetoren endured as a beacon of both hope and remembrance. As a result, the region has evolved into a unique location where history and nature meet. Furthermore, this site invites reflection on the immense and, at times, unforgiving power of the sea.

My Experience at Sunset

On a crisp autumn evening, I stood beside the waters of the Oosterschelde, facing the Plompetoren. Although the sky only changed colors subtly, the different layers of clouds created an extraordinary light display. This, in turn, gave the evening an almost magical atmosphere. In addition, the quiet allowed me to fully take in the moment. Knowing the history hidden in this place deepened my connection with Zeeland’s heritage and made the experience even more special.

A Beacon Full of Stories

Therefore, the Plompetoren is much more than a photogenic monument at the Oosterschelde. It tells a tale of humanity’s fight against the water, yet also of determination and endurance. This is why the location is a must-visit for those who love heritage and coastal scenery. While climbing the tower, you can scan the horizon and imagine how the area once looked. Thus, the tower beautifully bridges past and present.

This is part 1 of my visit to the Plompetoren in Koudekerke: with the chances of a colourful sky over the Oosterschelde fading, I decided to move my camera. What happened next? You’ll find out in Part 2 — coming in the new year.
