The Breath of the Evening Sea

The evening passes almost without a sound. The hypo that unsettled me earlier slowly fades. As my blood sugar recovers, the sun sinks into the North Sea. The light softens. Here on the seawall between Westkapelle and Domburg — though still officially Westkapelle — everything seems to fall back into place. I notice how I begin to settle as well.

Water moves gently across the basalt stones. Small waves flow between the rocks, unhurried. Above the sea, a few scattered clouds drift quietly through the sky. Further out, a row of wooden poles stretches into the water. At its end, sea, light and line seem to meet — as if arranged that way.

A place that keeps calling

This stretch of coastline has been one of my regular places for years. Westkapelle has a character of its own: space, rhythm and simplicity.
Whether at sunrise or sunset, the coast continues to surprise. Still, the evening light often feels most at home here — as if it naturally belongs.

I return here often. Sometimes with a camera, sometimes without. But always with the sense that the open space gives something back.

An evening with a rough edge

After the disruption earlier that evening, I thought the moment might be gone. Lost. But in a way, that made everything that followed more meaningful. As the sun meets the water and the colours slowly fade, the calm returns. Not dramatic or overwhelming, but quiet and certain. The kind of moment that stays with you.

We drove back to our holiday home in Oostkapelle with that feeling still present — that this is exactly what made the evening.

Holding on to the moment

The images from this evening are available as fine art prints or digital files. For those who recognise something in the quiet of this scene, it can be a way to give that feeling a place of its own.
