Where time stands still – A Personal Story in the Oosterschelde

A few weeks ago, I decided to photograph the shipwreck near Katse Veer again. Many photographers visit this spot, especially at low tide, when the wreck rises clearly above the sand. That often results in beautiful photos, but also very similar ones. This time, I wanted something different. I wanted to capture the ribs of the wreck that appear just above the surface at high tide. It felt like a fresh approach to my Oosterschelde landscape photography.

Returning to the Water After Many Years

About ten to twelve years ago, I bought a pair of waders to explore more creative possibilities in my photography. Because of my health, I never really had the chance to use them. They stayed in the closet, along with many plans I had to set aside. But now the moment had finally come. After all those years, I found myself standing in the water of the Oosterschelde again, close to Wilhelminadorp. The location felt familiar, yet also new, because I had never experienced it from this perspective.

Time That Seems Still, Yet Always Moves

For this photo session, I chose a long exposure. I wanted to capture the calm and slow rhythm that is so typical of Oosterschelde landscape photography. The shipwreck has been there for decades, slowly shaped by water and time. Meanwhile, the drifting clouds showed the opposite: movement and quiet change. That contrast struck me. It reminded me that not everything stays whole, yet there is always progress, even when it feels small.

A Minimalistic Scene Full of Character

The conditions were ideal. The water moved gently around my legs. The light was soft and clear. With the long exposure, the water turned into a smooth, reflective surface, while the ribs of the wreck stood out sharply. This created a minimalistic composition where every detail mattered. The combination of water, light, and history gives this place a unique atmosphere. That is exactly what makes it so special for Oosterschelde landscape photography.

Why I Keep Returning to This Landscape

As the sun slowly rose, the landscape awakened around me. The water whispered, the first light touched the horizon, and the birds began their early songs. It felt like the day was unfolding in its own gentle way. These are the moments I wake up early for. This is why I return to the Oosterschelde again and again. And this is why I love landscape photography: every morning is different, and every morning holds something worth keeping.
