The photo Storm Echoes along Nieuwesluis shows the power of the North Sea in Zeelandic Flanders in an impressive way. A stretched wave rolls toward the beach of Nieuwesluis, close to Breskens along the coast of Zeeland. The water moves between the wooden groynes at the exact moment the tide begins to turn. Above this dramatic scene hangs a dark layer of clouds. Yet a thin line of yellow light appears on the far horizon. This subtle glow gives the landscape a nearly cinematic atmosphere. The storm has passed, but its echo is still clearly felt along the Dutch coast.
A day after Storm Benjamin
This landscape photo was taken the day after Storm Benjamin in 2025. During the storm, I tried to capture many images. However, the photos did not turn out as strong as I had hoped. Sometimes everything falls into place, but just as often it does not. Landscape photography requires patience, timing and a fair amount of luck. The right light, a beautiful sunrise or sunset, and a strong sense of composition must all work together. Feeling also plays a major role. When my body feels restless, it rarely results in that one perfect shot, although luck can sometimes offer a small push.
The sea between wildness and calm
During and after the storm, I made countless photos along the coast of Zeeland. Although I will not upload any storm photos, the day after the storm provided two strong landscape images. The wind was still present and created a rough North Sea, but the shift toward calm was already becoming visible. This first photo, Storm Echoes along Nieuwesluis, captures that transition beautifully. The wave still rolls in with power, yet the atmosphere hints that nature is slowly regaining its breath. The second landscape photo, in which the sea has fully calmed, will appear in a future blog post.
