Where the sea comes to rest

After storm day Benjamin in 2025, the North Sea slowly began to recover. In the morning the wind was still strong, but as the day went on it gradually eased. By sunset, a nearly windless calm set in, the kind of moment where you truly feel “Where the sea comes to rest”. From the Zeeuws‑Vlaanderen beach at Nieuwesluis, near Breskens in Zeeland, I looked out over a wide landscape that felt both powerful and peaceful. A few small breaks in the clouded sky let warm light shine through, while ships on the horizon continued their route toward the Western Scheldt. It was only my second photo after the storm, yet already a moment I’ll never forget.

The silence after the storm

The transition from chaos to calm made this scene even more special. The waves still moved gently, but the force of the earlier hours seemed to have disappeared. The sea felt peaceful, almost inviting. As the wind continued to settle, an atmosphere emerged that you rarely experience after such a powerful storm. The soft light and the gentle motion of the water created a serene mood. In moments like this, the world seems to stand still. A sense of calm washed over me — something you don’t often feel in a world that moves so quickly.

Why this place feels so special

Landscape photography often draws me in during extreme weather, yet moments like these move me just as deeply. The salty air, the slowed rhythm of the sea, and the silence that follows a storm create an intense feeling of freedom. It’s a place where you can let everything go. Worries drift away, as if the wind gently carries them off. Sometimes I wish that feeling would stay forever, even though life doesn’t always allow it. That’s exactly why I try to capture it — so it doesn’t fade.
