Where the light hits the windmills

Creating a panorama of the Kinderdijk windmills during the golden hour may sound like a romantic idea — and it truly was. On a calm evening, I stood there with my wife, right in the heart of the windmill landscape, as the sun slowly moved toward the horizon. Heavy Dutch rain clouds drifted by, and at just the right moment, the light broke through.

The magic of the golden hour panorama in Kinderdijk

This panorama of the Kinderdijk windmills in the golden hour shows how special the connection between light and landscape can be. Sunlight touched the reeds and the windmills, and for a moment everything seemed to pause. The reeds turned golden, the sky remained unmistakably Dutch, and the windmills stood out powerfully against the passing clouds. To both sides, the landscape unfolded with water, wind and centuries‑old craftsmanship. In this single moment, human ingenuity and the natural world came together.

The challenge behind the panorama

This panorama consists of 46 individual photographs, stitched totally 24027 x 6388 pixels. I combined these images through a demanding stitching process that required patience and precision. Normally, photographers rely on specialized panorama software, but that option is currently too expensive for me. Instead, I worked with what I have: my current version of Photoshop. I adjusted, tested and restarted multiple times. Step by step, I brought the image together as a single whole.

A reflection of my life right now

Still, I completed the panorama, and that achievement gives me confidence. If this was possible, I believe recovery will follow as well. I truly look forward to heading out with my camera again, because photography plays an essential role in my mental well‑being. Those next 10 to 12 weeks cannot pass quickly enough.

Hope in light and landscape

Still, the panorama was completed. And that gives confidence. If this is possible, then I believe I will be okay too. I truly look forward to going out with my camera again, because mentally, photography is essential for me. Those next 10 to 12 weeks cannot pass quickly enough.
